What decides your offer

• Year, make and model. Some models have parts that sell long after the car stops running.
• Weight and metal. Every car has a floor value in steel that moves with the scrap market.
• What still works. A good engine, transmission, doors or wheels still count on a car that won't drive.
• The catalytic converter. A missing one lowers the number.
• Title situation. A clean title in your name is the simplest sale.

Why leaving a junk car parked can cost you

In unincorporated Clark County, the county's code enforcement page says an inoperative vehicle, one that can't be driven under its own power or isn't equipped to drive legally, “cannot be stored outside at a residence and must be removed from the property.” It also says vehicles must be parked on a paved surface, not grass, dirt or decorative rock. Cities such as Las Vegas, Henderson and North Las Vegas have their own codes.

Dumping a car on the street is worse. Under NRS 706.4477, when a vehicle is towed at someone else's request, the owner is presumed responsible for the cost of removal and storage, unless they can show they transferred it, for example with a signed bill of sale. A recorded sale is the clean way out.
